Today we traveled to the Azuay province specifically the capital city of Cuenca. Cuenca was such a beautiful city. It felt historic, yet very modern. It is known as a popular hotspot for Americans. Many immigrants from Cuenca travel to the United States and many go to New York where several of their family members or friends have relocated. The main courtyard resembles the courtyard of that in New York City and the trees planted in the yard are outlined. Certain buildings and sidewalks give off a very French ambiance. The Spanish gave the city of Cuenca the name Santa Maria in April 12, 1546. A fun fact we learned was that Pop John II visited the city of Cuenca at one point in time.
